Quelles est processus qui aboutit à la canonisation d’une personne ?
Pour que quelqu’un soit canonisé dans l’Eglise, il y a un dossier qui est présenté à la commission des canonisations. Celui qui présente ce dossier peut être un diocèse, une église, une communauté religieuse ou un groupe de personnes qui se réunit et convient que la personne qu’il veut canoniser a quelque chose de Saint en elle. Dans le dossier, trois éléments sont essentiels. D’abord les témoignages sur la vie de la personne, ensuite une enquête de moralité et enfin un rapport de la capacité d’intercession de la personne. Le dossier complet est soumis à la commission romaine basée au Vatican qui procède à une enquête sur le terrain. S’il est approuvé, la personne passe par la première étape qui est la béatification. On fait de la personne un bienheureux, quelqu’un qui a vécu une vie pieuse. Il faut préciser que dans cette commission, il y a aussi bien les prêtres, évêques, que des médecins et d’autres experts. Ces derniers présentent des arguments pour et contre. Quand on dit que quelqu’un est devenu Saint, cela ne veut pas dire qu’il a vécu de façon parfaite mais plutôt qu’il y a un domaine de la vie où il a fait la différence et dont on voit les fruits. Pour le cas du Pape Jean Paul II par exemple, il a été un pasteur hors pair, d’un accueil exceptionnel et qui a toujours été à la rencontre des personnes de différentes races et cultures. En cela, on trouve que c’était un homme habité par Dieu. Quand Jean Paul 23 est arrivé au Vatican, il a ouvert les portes et a dit que c’est une ère nouvelle qui commençait. C’est avec lui qu’à commencé le Concile vatican II qui a construit l’Eglise d’aujourd’hui.
Quels est le profil des personnes dont les dossiers sont soumis à la canonisation ?
Vous serez surpris. Beaucoup de Saints que nous connaissons ont été des pères et mères de familles. La canonisation n’est pas réservée qu’aux Papes, religieuses, prêtres ou religieux. Elle concerne toute personne qui vit de façon particulière les commandements de Dieu. Par exemple, Saint Martin a été fait Saint de la Charité parce qu’il était charitable. Il hébergeait les pauvres chez lui, les nourrissait et s’occupait d’eux. Mais à l’opposé, Saint Martin n’était pas obéissant aux instructions du couvent qui interdisait aux pensionnaires d’y emmener des gens. La charité était plus forte que lui. C’est pourquoi il a été fait Saint de la Charité.
Est-ce qu’il y a des camerounais ou africains que l’Eglise considèrent comme des Saints ?
Bientôt des camerounais seront des Saints. Il s’agit de Jean Thierry Ebogo, qui est mon ami du séminaire, mort en Italie. Son procès est très avancé au Vatican. Il y a aussi Baba Simon, l’un des premiers prêtres camerounais dont le dossier est aussi très avancé. D’ici peu, ils seront des Saints. Mais sur le continent africain, il y a Anuarita, Sainte Joséphine Bakita, Charles Lwanga et ses compagnons etc. Le problème de la canonisation en Afrique, c’est les communautés. Est-ce qu’elles demandent la canonisation et mettent tout en œuvre pour que les personnes qui ont vécues de façon sainte dans leurs communautés soient canonisées ?
Quel est le rôle du canonisé dans l’Eglise ?
Désormais, on se tourne vers lui et adressons nos prières pour qu’il intercède pour nous. Par exemple, Saint Christophe, le patron des voyageurs. Quand je me déplace, je me tourne vers lui et lui demande de me montrer comment on voyage en étant accompagné de Dieu. Il y a des saints des causes désespérées comme Sainte Rita vers qui on se tourne quand on en peut plus. Elle avait des stigmates au front qui lui faisait tellement mal mais elle a su comment vivre cette douleur avec Dieu. On lui demande de nous monter comment traverser de graves difficultés dans nos vies parce que ce sont des devanciers qui ont eu à affronter ces problèmes. Pour le Pape Jean Paul II, sa canonisation arrive à un moment où les guerres racistes, tribalistes et religieuses déchirent les peuples. Nous allons le prier de nous donner un cœur ouvert aux autres.
