Jazzman camerounais vivant aux Etats-Unis, il est également vocaliste et doctorant en musicologie à l’Université de Paris/Sorbonne. Il a mis sur le marché international le 10 novembre 2014, son 6ème album, «VoiStrings». Il a bien voulu nous donner les clés de cette trouvaille musicale qui a connue la participation de grands noms comme, Helio Alves (Piano), Lonnie Plaxico (Contrebasse), Willard Dyson (batterie), Jody Redhage (violoncelle), Lev ‘Ljova’ Zhurbin (alto) et Charenee Wade (voix).
A quoi renvoie le titre de l’album «VoiStrings» ?
Ce titre renvoie au mélange des voix et des cordes réunies dans cet album (alto, violoncelle, contrebasse Ndlr). «VoiStrings» évoque aussi la proximité qui existe entre la voix humaine et les instruments à cordes. Quand j’entends ces instruments, j’ai quelquefois l’impression d’entendre des voix humaines.
Vos fans auront-ils droit cette fois-ci à une continuité, des enrichissements ou à une cassure totale en termes de sonorités?
Il y a continuité dans la mesure où je réunis dans « VoiStrings » deux formules scéniques que j’utilise depuis une dizaine d’années. En même temps, cet album est bien évidemment et heureusement, traversé par de nouvelles sonorités. On y trouve notamment deux reprises de standards connus. L’un de Gabriel Fauré, de l’univers classique. L’autre de Herbie Hancock, jazzman. Chacun de mes albums reflète mon état d’esprit du moment. Ma curiosité et mes intérêts fluctuent au fil des ans. Ce nouvel opus est un prolongement de l’artiste que je suis, de ma culture musicale, de mes racines plurielles. Et une exploration de l’univers classique à travers un répertoire nourri de cordes.
Quels sont les thèmes que vous abordez dans ce nouvel album ?
Dans ce nouvel album, j’aborde les thèmes suivants : la paix, l’intégrité, l’équilibre, Dieu, l’intolérance, la liberté etc.
Vous êtes un musicien de notoriété établie aujourd’hui. On se demande ce qui guide le choix de vos collaborations comme sur cet album ?
Ce qui guide le choix de mes collaborations, c’est tout d’abord la compétence et les affinités musicales, ensuite les rapports humains et la manière de concevoir la vie. Je suis avant tout un esprit libre qui aime à vivre ses émotions comme il l’entend et à rester en phase avec lui-même, d’où ces choix esthétiques. Je ne suis pas un suiviste… (rires !).
Un nouvel opus impose de nouveaux challenges et de nouvelles dates. Quelle est votre actualité ?
Je sors de trois semaines de tournée et master classes en Europe (Autriche, Suisse, France et Italie). À cela s’est ajoutée la promotion du nouvel album. Des concerts sont prévus aux USA en début d’année 2015 et une tournée de près de deux mois (avril-mai) en Europe et au Canada. Je consacre aussi beaucoup de temps à mes travaux universitaires.
A quand des masters classes pour les jeunes artistes camerounais ?
J’espère en 2015.
Vous puisez votre inspiration de vos racines mais paradoxalement vous ne faites pas la promotion de votre musique au Cameroun. Pourquoi ?
Je ne suis pas promoteur de spectacles. Mon staff reste ouvert à toute proposition… À noter que « VoiStrings » sera bientôt disponible au Cameroun sous le label Azania Way Culture, distribué par Messapresse.
Quelques promoteurs de spectacles rencontrés disent de vous que vous êtes très exigent, à quand un spectacle sur votre terre natale ?
Il faut un minimum d’exigence pour pouvoir offrir quelque chose de qualité au public. Il en va de même pour l’exigence que s’impose l’artiste qui respecte son métier et par ricochet son auditoire. Je reste disponible pour une éventuelle tournée et des master class au Cameroun. Les promoteurs savent comment joindre mon management.
